Things to do in Osaka at night
1. Dotonbori
Our number one Osaka at night activity – get down to Dotonbori! It is Osaka’s most dazzling district at night, full of bright lights and riverside sights, plus late bars, restaurants and evening shopping.
From okonomiyaki and takoyaki to kushikatsu, Dotonbori (道頓堀) is famous for its street food late night bites, and the back streets are home to hidden gems like Hozenji ’moss man’ shrine and iconic izakayas.
Check out our guide to 25 things to in Dotonbori, Osaka’s most dazzling district >
2. Shinsekai
Fine to visit by day but better at night, Osaka’s Shinsekai district is home to numerous late night bars, classic kushikatsu joints plus fairground style attractions and shooting ranges.
Lit by neon lights and flashing signs outside bars, Shinsekai is famous for its Tsutenkaku Tower, offering incredible city nightscapes over Osaka.
Developed in the early 1900s, locals and foreigners flock to Shinsekai for its traditional pubs and retro ramen bars, a nice nostalgic neighborhood in Osaka.
Alas the famous Shinsekai puffer-fish sign has been taken now, but there are lots of restaurants to enjoy from classic chains like Kura Sushi to the famous Osaka DIY fishing restaurant Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi Shinsekai, where you are given a rod to catch your own dinner.
This is also a great spot to do late night souvenir shopping plus if you don’t fancy an izakaya or sake bar, there are a few beer vending machines too.
Read more in our guide to Shinsekai >
3. Glico Man Billboard
Go go Glico Man! This has to be Osaka’s most ‘lit’ attraction at night.
Dotonbori’s Glico running man reflected against the Tombori River is one of Dotonbori’s best things to see. No trip to Osaka is complete (probably) without recreating the famous running man pose and taking a picture for posterity.
An iconic Dotonbori attraction, the Glico Man in Osaka has been ‘running’ since 1935 (at least give him a breather) and is a ‘shining light’ (literally) in the Shinsaibashi community attracting millions of tourists every year.
From where to find the secret Glico Man viewing spot to his fascinating history, here is our ultimate guide to the Glico Running Man in Dotonbori >

4. Dotonbori river cruise / Osaka at night boat ride
The best way to explore Dotonbori at night is by boat ride – 20 minute cruises depart from the riverside regularly (and some evening party boats even seem to include beer and entertainment). Great for the night owls!
Most of the Dotonbori night river cruises have a guide / host who will give a local history of the area in several languages. The cruises are often quite fun and guests are encouraged to clap and cheer when going beneath bridges or enclosed spaces.
Most cruises depart from the Tazaemonbashi Bridge Boat Dock, just below the Don Quijote ferris wheel usually from mid morning until approx 9pm.
Plan My Japan tip – the Dotonbori River Cruise is included as part of the Amazing Osaka Pass >
Enjoy a different view of Dotonbori on a Osaka River Wonder River Cruise or book a Dotonbori District sightseeing cruise with a beer discount
5. Don Quijote Osaka – 24 hour shopping
Don Quijote Japan discount department stores are home to thousands of items generally at low prices, from Pocky to fake food, Hello Kitty to Kit Kats (plus more interesting ‘adult sections’ featuring TENGA).
There are over 30 Don Quijote stores in Osaka (including 10 MEGA Don Quijotes – which are BIG on bargains). The Dotonbori Don Quijote even has Japan’s only Donki Ferris wheel – more on this in a moment!
Most Don Quijote branches close between 3am and 5am but some stay open 24 hours like Don Quijote Umeda Honten.

6. Den Den Town Osaka / Nipponbashi Street Festa
Osaka’s trendiest neighborhood and hipster hangout, Den Den Town is the Osaka version of Akihabara (in Tokyo).
It has numerous gaming arcades, electronics stores and anime arcades plus weird and wonderful shops like a Dragon Quest themed Lawson store and huge TENGA adult store.
Once a year on the spring equinox, Den Den Town comes alive with the cosplay carnival that is Nipponbashi Street Festa, where thousands of otaku and gamers come out in their finest gaming garb dressed as manga and anime characters.
Other weeb things to do in Den Den Town Osaka at night include a Maidreamin cafe, gachapons galore plus karaoke lounges.

7. Donki Ferris Wheel
For the ultimate Don Quijote and night-time activity in Osaka, you need to take a spin on the Ebisu Tower Don Quijote Ferris Wheel in Dotonbori.
Japan’s most joyful sky wheel that offers Osaka’s best aerial views, this fun ferris wheel is perched on the side of the Don Quijote Dotonbori branch overlooking the streets.
From the ferris wheel capsule windows, you can see all the sights of Osaka and Dotonbori up high including the Tonburi river and its tourist cruise, Tsutenkaku Tower and Abeno Harukas.
Accessible via the Don Quijote Dotonbori store in Osaka and looking out over the river, this Osaka ferris wheel is one of the best ways to see the Osaka at night cityscape from up high.
The Don Quijote Ferris Wheel is open and spinning from 2pm to 8pm (last entry at 7.30pm) five days a week (closed on Tuesdays and Fridays).

8. 24 Hour Tonkatsu at Matsunoya
More Matsunoya pork tonkatsu please – one of the best (and cheapest) chain restaurants in Japan, Matsunoya is a great evening meal in Osaka at night. Some of the Osaka Matsunoya branches are open 24 hours, plus beer is cheap too!
With tonkatsu set meals starting from just 590 Yen (around £3 / $4 USD) in 2024, Japan’s Matsunoya is a great place to sit down and tuck into tasty tonkatsu and cheap combos.
Matsunoya Nansandori (a 10 minute walk from Dontonbori’s Glico Man) is open 24 hours so you can eat cheap tonkatsu all night long!

9. Hub Pubs in Osaka
‘Kanpai’ to a little bit of Britain in Osaka – there are several British themed Hub Pubs in Osaka open until late (1am on weekends) including HUB Shinsaibashi and HUB Namba Ebisubashi.
One of Japan’s biggest bar chains with over 100 pubs, the 82 Ale House and HUB pubs are British themed pubs that have (VERY) happy hours, pub grub style food plus bar interiors just like British pubs.
If you are planning a big night out in Osaka, the Hub Pub happy hours are an expensive way to kick-start your evening – they are a great spot to watch live sports too like baseball.
Check out our full guide to Japan’s British Themed HUB Pub Bars and 82 Ale Houses here >
10. Go to a Osaka baseball game
Baseball in Osaka is big business and the city’s most popular sport.
So if you happen to be visiting Kobe during the Japanese Baseball season (usually March to October), you must purchase Orix Buffaloes or Hanshin Tigers tickets and make a home-run to Hanshin Koshien Stadium (Tigers) or Kyocera Dome Osaka (Buffaloes).
Osaka baseball tickets can easily be bought by foreigners or visitors online or in person at the box office.
Japanese baseball games are always fun with cheerleaders, bands, beers, cheers and more – read our experience of going to a Tokyo Dome baseball game with the Yomiuri Giants or seeing the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
Check out the Osaka Amazing Pass, which includes admission into over 40 Osaka attractions >
11. Umeda Sky Building viewing deck
One of the best things to do in Osaka at night, we recommend booking a Umeda Sky Building & Kuchu Teien Observatory ticket in advance.
For unparalleled panoramic (360 degree) views of Osaka, Umeda Sky is a stunning outdoor observation deck (be aware the outdoor area closes in bad weather). It is definitely one of the best observation decks in Osaka.
Located across the 39th and 40th floors, Shibuya Sky is 170 meters up and open until 10.30pm every evening (last entry is at 10pm). Entry starts from 2,000 Yen and a Yukata dressing up experience is available too.
Book your Umeda Sky tickets here >
12. ROR Comedy Club
Heard the one about the English language comedy club in Osaka? It’s no joke!
The ROR Comedy Club puts on 100% english stand up comedy and shenanigans six nights a week in Osaka (it is closed on Thursdays so you have to make your own mirth then).
Lots of international touring comedians have played the ROR Comedy Club and it is in the heart of Dotonbori so make a night of it.

13. Giant 3D Akita Inu dog Dotonbori billboard
Here at ‘Plan My Japan’, we are big fans of the 3D billboards in Japan, so much so we’ve written about the cool 3D billboards in Tokyo here.
Not one to be left out, Osaka / Dotonbori has recently got in on the 3D billboard action by launching a huge 3D Akita Inu dog billboard above Ebisubashi Bridge, where the playful puppy jumps around the screen.
Better yet, this Osaka prime puppy 3D puppy billboard is split across two screens so the Akita Inu bounds between the two – good boy!
You’ll occasionally have to watch more serious ads but this is still a fun thing to see in Osaka at night.
Try this – Osaka: tea ceremony experience and more >
14. Osaka late night arcades
There are plenty of games arcades and retro gaming machines in Osaka – the biggest and best arcades are typically Taito Station in Den Den Town, SEGA GIGO or the massive Round1 Stadium Sennichimae.
They all have the usual UFO / claw machines, dance machines, photo booths and cool games like Taiko no Tatsujin Japanese Drumming Game.
If you only have time to visit one arcade in Osaka at night, our recommendation would be Round1 Stadium Sennichimae, as it is open 24 hours and HUGE.

15. Late night Osaka karaoke
OK, karaoke in Osaka at night might be a cliche but we do know it is pretty inexpensive and really good fun (especially if you are visiting after going to an izakaya or sake bar).
Karaoke is commonplace in Osaka / Japan but Den Den Town, Dotonbori and Namba have their fair share of karaoke booths and lounges (over 20 on our last count). Incidentally, if you’d rather do karaoke by day, the daytime rates are a bit cheaper.
All the major chains can be found in Osaka like Karaoke Pasela, Joysound and Jankara, and song language choices usually include Japanese, English and Mandarin.
This is one of the best late night activities in Osaka with most karaoke lounges open from 9am until 5am to 6am the next morning – so get singing!

16. Hozenji-Yokocho Alley in Osaka at night
Hozenji Yokocho has so much going on both day and night, from cool lunchtime eateries to epic neon-lit izakayas and kushikatsu restaurants.
Hozenji Yokocho is just a short five minute walk away from Ebisubashi Bridge and the Glico Man sign – it is Dontonbori’s epicenter of back-street bars and late-night izakayas.
The best time to visit Hozen-ji Yokocho is at night, as the alleyways are more atmospheric plus the lanterns are all lit up.

17. Dotonbori Wolfen
Have you spotted the Wolfen of Dotonbori at night? A mythical (and often musical) mascot of mystery wearing a blue hooded coat and wolf-mask, Osaka’s Wolf man / Wolfen is a weird and wonderful thing to see (or hear) down by the river at night.
From waving at the passengers on the Tombori River Cruises to removing dirt from Osaka’s streets (literally, like litter picking, not in the Superman sense), the Osaka Wolfman has kind of become a Dotonbori attraction in his own lifetime.
He is a ‘furry’ interesting thing to spot too (even for Osaka!) – although this wolf prefers to play the melodica rather than howl at the moon at night!

18. Tsutenkaku Tower at night
We’ve already talked about Umeda Sky but for a more nostalgic experience, try Tsutenkaku Tower (meaning “Tower Reaching Heaven”), an iconic Shinsekai structure that was opened in 1956, with an observation deck 90 meters off the ground.
Amazingly, this is the second tower built on this spot as the original one from 1912 was badly damaged in 1943.
Easy to spot because of its nocturnal neon lights, there is even an unlikely shrine inside to Billiken, the weird looking character known as the God of Happiness (weirdly created by an American art teacher in 1910) – touch his feet for good fortune (hmmmm).
The designer was Tachu Naito, who was also the designer of Tokyo Tower and Nagoya Tower – check out our guide to all the top Tokyo observation decks here >

19. Cat Cafe Mocha Osaka Shinsaibashi
Shinsaibashi Cat Cafe Mocha is one of the most ‘purr-fect’ things to do in Osaka at night – ‘fur’ real. You might have been to cat cafes in the past but the Osaka Mocha Cat Cafes take it to the next kitty level.
We think cat feeding time at Mocha Cat Cafe might be the cutest thing we ever did in Japan. You should visit this top Osaka cat cafe right ‘miaow’ – well before 8pm at night, as that is when they close.
Feeding time is usually 10.30am and 7.30pm (half an hour after opening and half an hour before closing).

20. Osaka Go Karting at night
You’ve played the video games but now you can actually whizz through the streets of Osaka at night on go-karts dressed as gaming characters (but not officially as Mario, Luigi or Princess Daisy as Nintendo’s lawyers have put paid to that).
Tour Osaka’s night-time highlights dressed as cute, Kawaii comic characters dashing around Osaka districts at night like Dotonbori, Shinsekai and Namba. There are both daytime and night-time street karting tours in Osaka.
Please note an international drivers license is required to go street karting in Osaka.

22. Universal Studios Osaka at night
Osaka’s biggest theme park, Universal Studios has over 60 rides and themed attractions and is open until 10pm daily. There is so much to see and do, you could easily make a day and night of it!
Themed zones at Osaka Universal Studios include The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park, Jurassic Park, Amity Village (home to the joyful ‘Jaws’ ride, Waterworld plus recreations of San Francisco and New York streets.
The added bonus of staying for the evenings is that they usually have a night-time show at around 8pm (at the time of writing, it is the Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show).
In 2021, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios also opened meaning you take part in an official Mario Kart race IRL.

23. Osaka Castle lit up at night
Osaka’s most famous landmark, Osaka Castle was originally built in the 1850s but destroyed several times by political events and natural disasters.
Its current incarnation dates back to 1931 (updated again in the 1990s) and is more of a shell than an actual castle.
Surrounded by gorgeous green parkland and a popular spot during cherry blossom season in Osaka, the castle lights up every night until around 10pm (the park is free to visit).

24. Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Arcade
Osaka’s main shopping district, Shinsaibashi, is a short walk from the Dontonbori / Tombori River.
Shinsaibashi is the overarching shopping area whilst Shinsaibashi-suji is the huge covered shopping arcade that is ideal for all weather retail therapy.
Here you’ll find big high-street and international brands like UNIQLO, Apple, GAP and H&M – there are also a shed-load of Japanese pharmacy stores and konbinis / convenience stores like 7-Eleven here.

25. Spa World Osaka
Time to get steamy in Osaka at night (and we don’t mean in a Den Den Town backroom kind of way). Spa World is a public spa, sauna and hot pools that has 8 themed floors, some of which are open from 10am to 8.45am (so almost 24 hours a day).
You can even have hot scrub treatments to get rid of the hangovers you might experience from all the nearby izakayas.
You could stay here for hours as there is a bar, restaurant, cafe and shop onsite to enjoy mid soak across several floors.
Please note showers are requested before you enter the pools at Spa World and tattoos are not allowed.
You can also stay at the Spa World Hotel with booking.com and agoda.com.
26. Kaiyukan Aquarium
Osaka’s Kaiyukan is the world’s largest aquarium and open until 8pm every evening. There are over 15 large tanks, domes and exhibitions including several hundred types of sea life plus a seal dome and penguin enclosure.
Best of all, Kaiyukan has a special immersive night-time aquarium with sound and lighting effects that kick in after 5pm, making it seem like the tanks are enveloped in moonlight.

27. Teamlab Botanical Garden Osaka
The digital art museums set up by teamLabs across Japan are some of Japan’s most famous immersive experiences and Osaka now has its very own Teamlab Botanical Garden, a permanent night-time exhibition.
Teamlab Botanical Garden Osaka is an outdoor space located in Nagai Botanical Garden and has digitized nature, from fields of lit up sunflowers at night and a lake of lanterns to incredible sculptures covered in vibrant projection mapped images
Teamlab Botanical Garden Osaka prices in 2024 start from 2,200 Yen per adult and 700 Yen for small children.
This is a unique immersive experience in Osaka and due to its popularity we would highly recommend booking your skip-the-line tickets in advance with Klook here >

28. Kura Sushi Tokyo at night – open until midnight
Kura Sushi has to be Japan’s most joyful revolving sushi bar (“kaitenzushi”) and conveyor belt restaurant.
All of the sushi and drinks arrive by conveyor belt, plus putting away your finished dishes has been ‘gamified’. For every five dirty plates you drop into a slot on your table, you get a free go at an online game – great for families and big kids of all ages!
As prices at Kura Sushi in Japan start from just 110 Yen ( less than $1 / £1 a piece), it is one of the most affordable and authentic revolving sushi bar experiences you’ll encounter.
Most Kura sushi restaurants are open until midnight (last orders at 11:30pm) including the Kura Sushi Dotonbori Global Flagship Store.
From ordering food to sushi conveyor belt etiquette (plus our visit to Japan’s largest Kura Sushi), here is our ultimate guide to eating at Kura Sushi in Japan >
29. Dotonbori Tsuribori fishing
Go fish! Time for some indoor fishing at Dotonbori Tsuribori – honestly, we ain’t talking utter ‘carp’!
Grab a fishing rod and fish food and start catching catfish or carp – timed tickets are available and it works on a catch and release system (so no eating or cooking them).
The latest reviews for Dotonbori Tsuribori have been a bit mixed so buyer beware – it is open from 10am to 10pm daily.

30. Play Pachinko
Hear the noise of coins rattling and arcade slots ringing? That’ll likely be one of the numerous Pachinko parlors (you’ll find them all over Osaka at night).
A bit like casinos in the West, Pachinko arcades consist of hundreds of machines in close proximity where players play the pinball style Pachinko machines, where getting the balls in certain areas wins tokens or cash prizes.
Given each machine has dozens of small ball bearings and there are hundreds of machines constantly in play, the noise can be quite deafening – we also found them to be quite smokey places as cigarettes linger in the area.
There are several huge Pachinko parlors and lounges in Osaka including Rakuen Namba, Access Shinsaibashi and Maruhan Nambashinkan.

31. Puri-kura a plenty – Japanese photo booths

32. Kuidaore Tarō
If you are walking the streets of Dotonbori in Osaka at night, you’ll likely see a colorful and comical character – the Osaka Clown, known as Kuidaore Tarō.
He is located in the Nakaza Kuidaore building which is free to visit (and with loads of late night restaurants inside).
Kuidaore Tarō is the famous mechanical Osaka clown character, dressed in red and white stripes banging a big drum and the mascot of Dotonbori.
Such is his popularity, there is even a Kuidaore Tarō clown gift shop in the Nakaza Kuidaore Building where you can buy everything from clown magnets to circus sweets.
From its history to the most clown-like gifts, check out our guide to the Osaka clown, Kuidaore Tarō and the famous Nakaza Kuidaore building>
33. Hozenji Temple
Hidden away in the backstreets of Dotonbori amongst all the okonomiyaki and izakayas, Osaka’s Hozenji Temple is open 24 hours and perhaps best known for its moss-covered statue of the deity Fudo-myo-o.
One of the most unusual and beautiful Buddhist temples in Osaka, the tiny temple of Hozenji and its moss-like figure is an easy two minute walk from the main Tonburi river area.
Part of the main allure of the Hozenji Temple is not only the mossy growth over one of the statues to almost turn it into a green man but also the unlikely location.
It is literally a small temple snugly hidden down a back street (‘Yokocho’) with various overt Osaka comings and goings associated with the Dotonbori entertainment district.
From the moss-man deity to the interesting characters that visit, here is our full guide to Osaka’s Hozenji Temple>
34. Convenience stores in Osaka at night
Japanese convenience stores (also known as ‘konbinis’ in Japan) are mostly open 24 hours and are a treasure trove of tasty snacks like egg sandwiches, plus alcohol like beer and sake.
There are around 55,000 convenience stores in Japan as of summer 2024 and the biggest convenience store chain is 7-Eleven with 22,000 stores, who sell oodles of instant noodles every day (although we think FamilyMart is much better).
