Komeda’s Coffee コメダ珈琲店  – Japan’s Nostalgic Coffee Chain

Have you ‘bean’ to Komeda’s Coffee コメダ珈琲店,? One of our favourite Japanese coffee shop chains, there are almost 1,100 Komeda’s Coffee shops across Japan.

Started in 1968 in Nagoya, Komeda’s coffee shop is often like taking a step back in time with their brown wooden furniture and bare red brick walls.

Locations and opening hours

As of late 2025, there are around 1,100 branches of Komeda’s Coffee across Japan.

Most Komeda coffee shops open from around 7am until 10pm / 11pm – however, in busier places some stay open until 5am like Komeda’s Coffee Shinjuku Yasukuni-dōri branch which stays open until 5am at weekends. Please note there are no 24 hour branches.

They have also branched out overseas – we’ve seen locations in Taiwan (we visited the Keelung branch when it first opened and the queue was massive) plus they have locations in China, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

History and popularity of Komeda’s Coffee

Komeda’s Coffee is one of Japan’s most popular coffee shop chains and it has been around for almost 60 years! Established in the late 1960s, founder Taro Kato opened the first branch of Komeda’s Coffee in Nagoya (sadly, this one no longer exists).

Komeda’sコメダ珈琲店 name is derived from the Japanese word ‘kome’ (rice) as Kato’s original family business was a rice shop.

You might see the cartoon Komeda mascot – Komedandy who wears a monocle and knows all about good coffee (probably).

One of the reasons it is so popular is the sense of nostalgia in some branches – elderly citizens who used to love going there as kids still return there plus it is suitable for all ages and very inexpensive compared to the likes of Starbucks.

In fact, you could say their cafe interiors feel a little dated but it is this sense of nostalgia that makes Komeda’s so inviting to all ages (especially with families and Japan’s elderly population).

People also like how the Komeda’s Coffee interiors and sitting areas are quite cosy, almost like visiting a friend’s house. The social factor (meeting friends and colleagues etc) also plays a big part in the success of Komeda.

Another thing we noticed – so many Japanese restaurants now use kiosk or tablet ordering but Komeda’s retains waiters and serving staff to take your orders – we think some diners prefer that personal touch.

The Komeda’s Coffee experience / Komeda’s breakfast

Although open all day, Komeda’s Coffee is generally busiest at breakfast time – workers, elderly groups and students swotting can all be spied in store, drinking big cups of coffee and enjoying breakfast or a hearty lunch.

If you are looking for a light and affordable breakfast in Japan, we highly recommend the chain restaurant Komeda’s Coffee.

If you order a coffee before 11am you can also select a complimentary toasted bread with a topping set (choose from hard boiled egg, egg salad spread or sweet adzuki bean paste).

You can also select raspberry jam or butter.

You can also pay a little extra to have a larger coffee (do it!)

The bread is super fluffy and delicious! Every time we head to one of the restaurants for breakfast it is packed with both locals and tourists – we have eaten here many times during our Japan trips.

We love going to Komeda’s for their incredible breakfast sets where you can chunky toast and a choice of egg mayonnaise or other sides for ‘free’ when you buy any hot drink (before 11am).

Komeda’s Coffee Food

Komeda’s Coffee serves hot and cold food all day, including lunch-time sets, hot sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers and more.

Dishes and drinks start from as low as 550 Yen but most combos / set menus cost around 1000 yen upwards – it is pretty good value.

They also have lots of decadent desserts  – so many in fact it can be hard to choose which to have.

As well as their coffee and breakfast deal, Komeda’s is also famous for its Shiro Noir sweet treat (シロノワール) – a heated pastry topped with soft-serve ice cream and oodles of syrup.

Komeda’s Coffee merchandise and souvenirs

Such is the cult of and popularity of Komeda’s Coffee in Japan, you can even buy Komeda’s Coffee gachapon toys. Their range of gachapon toys are widely available across many gachapon stores in Japan.

There have been several series of Komeda’s Coffee Gachapon toys which include kawaii capsule toys like mini dessert dishes (including Shiro Noir), the Komeda’s mascot and cute tiny coffees – you can even get the Komeda’s signboard and menu in gachapon form.

We’ve also seen several series of Komeda’s Coffee blind boxes and bags from toy manufacturers such as Bandai Namco and Re-ment available in Tokyo toy shops – plus Komeda’s Coffee branded shirts and caps online.

And it isn’t just Komeda’s Coffee getting into toy and gachapons – most Japanese chain restaurants have some form of gachapon toy collection such as Saizeriya, Kura Sushi, Coco Ichibanya, Denny’s, Gindaco and Mos Burger.

Other things to know

  • The oldest surviving branch still open today is their third Komeda branch Komeda’s Coffee Takaoka Branch / コメダ珈琲店 高岳店 which opened in 1972.
  • Komeda’s operates three bakeries and several sweet shops – we have yet to visit these so we will do more ‘research’ (yum) on our next trip!
  • In the summer of 2025, Komeda’s Coffee did a cool collaboration with Pokemon, creating a ‘Slowpoke Shiro-Noir’ dessert – gotta try them all!
