Why visit the Doraemon Future Department store?

It is the very first official Doraemon shop in the world and is one of Odaiba’s most popular shops (it is also near to the incredible moving Gundam statue, Small Worlds Tokyo and even a replica Statue of Liberty).

It even has its own Doraemon Times Square outside (more on this later).

In effect, it is a delightful Doraemon department store packed with thousands of gifts from Dorami drapes to Nobi Nobita notepads. Be sure to bring a big bag to take home all these dreamy Doraemon delights (or just buy a Doraemon bag whilst you are there!).

Split into several areas including customizable and DIY (Design It Yourself – or should that be ‘Doraemon It Yourself’). There are lots of fun immersive games to play as well, perfect for children and Doraemon fans of all ages. You can even visit the Doraemon Post Office or browse the book zone.

One of our favourite bits was the huge Doraemon model (complete with a rather beautiful bow tie and bell) you can pose with in-store.

Your inner ‘Otaku’ wants you to just run in and buy up everything before playing on the Doraemon Secret Gadget Lab games. So if you are a massive fan, allow at least a couple of hours for your visit to the store.

Some of the best gifts and merchandise we spotted in Japan’s first official Doraemon shop included:

Ceramic bowls (costing 5,500 Yen)

Hand towels (costing 1,650 Yen)

Baby Castella Makers (so you can bake in the shape of Doraemon’s face – too cute!)

There is something to suit all budgets and tastes – one of the least expensive items was a small dessert spoon costing 660 Yen.

Doraemon Secret Gadget Lab Tokyo; Immersive Doraemon games and activities

After you have shopped ‘til you dropped, check out Doraemon’s Secret Lab located in the same store – there are four fun games and interactive stories to take part in.

The Anywhere Door is free but the other three require a small fee – 350 Yen per game (correct as of 2024).

The Dorayaki throwing / drop game looked the most fun – one little kid was having the time of his life and the look of shock on his face when all the dorayakis rained down on him was priceless.

The other three Doraemon Secret Gadget Lab adventures are:

  • Hopter VR screens
  • Air Cannon Target Shooting
  • Anywhere Door travelling experience (free)

Whilst the games in the Secret Gadget Lab are played by all ages, they seem to be most suited to smaller children

Gachapon Toy Capsules

The store also has a whole section dedicated to Doraemon gachapon machines and toy capsules.

Popular with otaku (オタク – Japanese pop culture) and visiting tourists, Gachapon machines in Japan are vending machines that dispense capsule toys in a small round plastic case. There are dozens of different Doraemon gachapon toys and series to collect.

Most gachapon machines and sub varieties have four to six types in each machine meaning you often don’t know which one you are going to get.

There are also sometimes Doraemon models to pose with but as of early 2024, these seem to have disappeared (hopefully just for cleaning or repair) – please let us know if you spot them again so we can update this!
