Tokyo February 2026 Festivals and Events

From blossom festivals to ‘setsubun’ spring celebrations, there is lots to enjoy in Tokyo in February:

Setsubun

3 February 2026

Early February sees the official start of spring in Tokyo and Japan, known as Setsubun 節分 – in 2026, it is confirmed as 3 February.

Based on the old Japanese Lunar Calendar, Setsubun 節分 literally means ‘seasonal division’ and marks the passing of winter and the arrival of spring (keep an eye out for the cherry blossom / sakura and plum blossoms).

It’s a traditional celebration (not a public holiday) that is celebrated by many (especially elderly Japanese) at shrines and temples or in their own homes.

Setsubun ceremonies are said to repel evil spirits and welcome good fortune with activities like throwing roasted soy beans at the devil (Mamemaki) and eating Ehomaki, an epic sushi roll that is long and meant to be eaten in silence.

Popular Tokyo temples to see in Setsubun include Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Okunitama-jinja Shrine and Zojoji Temple.

Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival 2026

3 February 2026

Shimokitazawa is one of our favourite Tokyo neighborhoods and often under the radar for many travellers – so if you are visiting Tokyo in February, it is the perfect time to visit and combine it with the Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival.

The streets of Shimokitazawa come alive with more Setsubun celebrations, again marking the start of Spring in Japan as well-wishers throw mamekami (roasted soy beans) at evil spirits / tengu (easy to spot with their giant goblin masks and devious devil faces).

The 2026 Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival takes place at the start of February and will see lots of people taking part in parades, street food stalls and colourful celebrations at the local Shimokitazawa shrines and Tokyo temples.

Yokohama Chinatown celebrations

Early to mid February 2026

An easy day trip from Tokyo, Yokohama is home to the largest Chinatown 横浜中華街 in Japan, and one of the top things to do in Yokohama.

Yokohama’s Chinatown developed near the harbor after Yokohama’s port opened to foreign trade in 1859 which attracted many thousands of Chinese settlers to the city. It is now one of the best and busiest places to visit in Japan’s second biggest city.

Tokyo February events

Special celebrations take place along packed streets in early February including lion dances and special ceremonies in temples like Mazu Miao and Kuan Ti Miao temple.

Yamashitachō Park also plays host to a festival with a colorful parade that takes in several Yokohama streets featuring acrobats, dancers and performances.

The best way to reach Yokohama from Tokyo is to take the Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed rail from Tokyo Station to Shin-Yokohama Station. The journey takes just 18 minutes and the trains leave every 15-30 minutes.

Tokyo Valentine’s Day

14 February 2026

Love is in the air! A popular Tokyo event in February, Valentine’s Day is a fun ‘affair’ but a little different in Japan.

It is a little different as in Japan, Valentine’s Day is traditionally when women / girls give gifts to their husbands / boyfriends like jewellery and chocolates, especially white chocolate. Pocky is a particularly popular Valentine’s gift – they even have special gift sets and seasonal flavors for this very occasion.

Then on 14 March (a month later), it is ‘White Day’ in Japan when it becomes the men’s turn to buy their favourite female gifts in return. Too cute!

We also expect lots of wonderful window displays showing Valentine’s day gifts and specials in Tokyo shopping areas like Ginza.

Tokyo Cherry Blossom / Plum Blossom

February 2026

It is a little too early to forecast the 2026 Tokyo cherry blossom and plum blossom dates yet but they often appear sometime in late February – however, peak cherry blossom bloom in Tokyo is usually starting in March.

Tokyo February events

Plum blossoms (ume) usually start a little earlier than cherry blossoms and early plum blossom festivals in Tokyo in February 2026 include Setagaya Ume Matsuri (Plum Festival) せたがや梅まつりin Hanegi Park (Setagaya), Fucho Kyodonomori Park Plum Festival 2026 and Bunkyo Ume Matsuri festival.

That said, we saw plum blossoms last year as early as December (at Himeji Castle) so who knows when it will be fully in bloom.

Some of the best spots for Tokyo cherry blossom / plum blossom are Shinjuku Gyoen, Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi Park.
