Himeji One Day Itinerary 2026 Guide

The perfect 1 day Himeji itinerary! Perhaps best known for its striking castle (one of Japan’s finest), Himeji is one of the quieter Japanese cities we’ve visited – it makes it the perfect place to escape crowds and the usual hustle and bustle you might encounter elsewhere.

From the gorgeous Koko-en gardens to the sublime Otokoyama hachimangu shrine, stamp collecting to traditional temples and shopping streets, there is plenty to add to your 1 day Himeji itinerary (and yes, Himeji castle is the highlight, one of only a few original castles in Japan remaining).

Here is our ultimate 1 day Himeji itinerary with photos.

How to get to Himeji

Himeji can be easily reached from Tokyo in 3 hours, plus other nearby cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Okayama or Hiroshima in less than 1 hour so it is very accessible (and a great way to escape tourist hordes if you have had enough of crowds along the main golden route).

How to get to Himeji from Tokyo

The quickest method to get from Tokyo to Himeji station is by the Nozomi Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station – the journey takes around 3 hours. You can also take the slightly slower Hikari Shinkansen train in 3.5 hours.

If you are on a budget you can take a highway bus but the journey is 9–10 hours long.

How to get to Himeji from Osaka

The quickest way to get from Osaka to Himeji station is by the Sanyo Shinkansen train (Hikari/Sakura or Kodama trains) from Shin-Osaka Station – the journey takes around 25 to 30 minutes.

Alternatively, for a cheaper fare (but longer journey) take the JR Special Rapid Service on the JR Kobe Line from Osaka Station (around 1 hour) or the Direct Limited Express from Hanshin Osaka-Umeda Station to Sanyo Himeji Station (around 1 hour 35 minutes + and JR Pass not accepted).

To stay overnight in Himeji or not?

This 1 day Himeji itinerary can be achieved as a day trip if you are travelling between cities.

For example if you are travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima, you could do a quick visit to Himeji for the day (and store your luggage in the coin-operated lockers both inside and just outside JR Himeji Station).

If this sounds a bit too rushed, you could stay in a hotel for 1 or 2 nights. We were slow travelling around Japan so we booked 2 nights in a Himeji hotel. We arrived late afternoon on the first day, spent the second full day doing this 1 day Himeji itinerary, and checked out on the morning of the third day.

We stayed at Daiwa Roynet Hotel Himeji which was in the upper mid range price bracket, and had decent sized clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel was a short walk from Himeji station and many restaurants, plus it has an onsite laundry/coffee shop.

Himeji 1 day itinerary / things to do in Himeji

During our time in Himeji we enjoyed walking around the streets and all of the Himeji attractions we did were walkable from the city center including the castle itself (in fact, Himeji Castle is so huge, you can see it from spots all over the city).

Himeji Visitor Center / souvenir stamps

Whether you are getting the train here for a daytrip to Himeji or are staying overnight like we did, a good place to start your Himeji itinerary is Himji Station itself.

Himeji station
Himeji station

The main Himeji City Information Center (map) is actually located in the station itself and is one of the best tourist information centers we’ve been to in Japan.

Staff were very helpful and there were hundreds of physical / printed leaflets to pick up as well as usual signage boards and local weather updates.

Better yet, here you can pick up those all important souvenir stamps and tourism trading cards that Japan is so famous for. We picked up two collectible cards including the Himeji Castle Combiner Oshirobots – 城郭合体オシロボッツ (real-life castles that transform into huge fictional robots) plus a manhole cover card of Himeji Castle.

Keep an eye out for the Himeji Castle manhole covers in the city!

We also got a souvenir stamp of the Himeji City / castle mascot, Shiromaruhime (しろまるひめ), a mochi based character with hat that looks the castle – a super cute souvenir stamp.

Plan My Japan tip – one of the best places to take a photo of Himeji Castle and the city is from the free viewing area / observation deck on the first floor viewing deck of Himeji station.

Walk or take the bus to Himeji Castle and check out all the viewing spots

From the train station, you can walk along the main road (Otemae Street) to Himeji Castle in around 20 minutes (1.5km) or jump on one of the local buses that go and down Otemae Street regularly including the Himeji Castle bus loop hl6 (9 stops – 210 Yen).

Start the day by walking a loop around the castle and photographing the castle from its many viewpoints.

Loop of Himeji Castle best viewpoints

As well as the viewing deck at Himeji Station, there are several really good vantage points of Himeji Castle both near to the entrance and a little further away.

The best closest Himeji Viewing viewing we found was on the top floor / outside terrace of the Egret Himeji Community Center (map) across the road from the castle itself – just head into the lifts / elevators in reception, hit the button for the top floor and then turn left as you head out the lift. This is also a handy stop in Himeji for clean and free toilets!

After visiting Egret Himeji Community Center, walk around the castle anti clockwise to visit the following viewpoints (the loop should take just over 1 hour).

Shiromidai Park

Another nearby place to get a great castle view is Shiromidai Park (map), popular with locals and just across from the community center.

It is most famous for its massive silver carp / lion statues (shachihoko), which have miniature replicas of the castle on their fins – it makes for a fun photo spot with the real Himeji castle in the background.

One nice view point of the castle in Himeji is the Himeji City Museum of Art (map), once an army storage depot and now reimagined as an arts and culture space warehouse.

Kind of like a ‘living museum’, you can visit various old buildings in the grounds or pay to go inside and see the permanent collection – 2026 admission prices at Himeji City Museum of Art are 210 Yen per person (temporary touring exhibitions may cost more).

Otokoyama haisui’ike park (Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine)

Walk around 15 minutes from Himeji City Museum of Art to the viewpoint at Otokoyama haisui’ike park (map).

This is a steep hike up steps (very sweaty in hot weather) but totally worth it – in fact, if you are staying in in the city and it is a clear day, this would be one of our top 5 things to do in Himeji as the views are so spectacular.

Otokoyama haisui'ike park (Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine)

There is a small shrine at the foot of the steps and another couple on the walk – 200 steep stairs lead up to Otokoyama haisui’ike park (which is also very popular with joggers training) and the view at the top is worth all the effort.

As well as an aerial view of Himeji Castle and the surrounding mountains, a postcard perfect panorama awaits as Himeji and surrounding Hyōgo Prefecture unfurls below.

Lunchtime in Himeji

Before you visit Kōko-en Garden and Himeji Castle, grab an early lunch from a local restaurant (the gardens and castle close at 5pm so make sure you allow plenty of time in the afternoon to enjoy exploring without rushing).

There are lots of lunch spots in Himeji from cheap Japanese chain restaurants to local lunch and brunch places.

We wanted to achieve a lot during our one day Himeji itinerary so we grabbed a quick bite to eat at Royal Host Himejihonmachi (map), which we think might be the ‘Queen’ of all chain restaurants.

royal host restaurant japan

It is such good value, the serving staff are always incredibly nice plus literally every Royal Host branch we went into (even the newly built ones) felt like stepping back in time several decades – and this one is easy to walk to from Himeji Castle.

Other non chain / local lunchspots include:

Kassui-ken restaurant 活水軒 (map) – famous for their eel (anago) bento and soba noodles, plus it overlooks Koko-en Garden (our next stop on this Himeji itinerary).

Kushiyaki Kobe beef 串焼き神戸牛 (map) – definitely a treat; highly rated but also quite expensive.

Menme 讃岐うどん めんめ (map) – famous for their udon noodle dishes at good prices (and close to the castle).

Visit Kōko-en Garden and Himeji Castle

After lunch head to Kōko-en Garden (map) and purchase a combo ticket for both the gardens and Himeji Castle. This costs 1,050 Yen for adults and 360 Yen for children and works out about 260 Yen cheaper than buying separate tickets.

Prices are correct as of January 2026 – it will likely increase steeply from 1 March 2026 when the castle admission alone goes up to 2,500 yen!

- 1 day Himeji itinerary

Kōko-en, (好古園) is a traditional Japanese garden. Amazingly, although it feels very historic and old, it is actually a reconstruction (built in the 1990s) of the former samurai compound and castle gardens that were once here.

Comprising around 10 Edo style houses and out buildings, Kōko-en also has pretty ponds (full of koi carp), stone bridges, a bamboo grove and many ideal photo spots

Inside, you can see a tea ceremony garden complete with a traditional tea house (souju-an – 500 Yen per seat) and many historical Japanese dramas have been filmed here including Abarenbo Shogun, Mito Komon, Rurouni Kenshin, Vai Raja Vai and Sekigahara.

Kōko-en Garden Himeji Castle

After visiting the gardens head over to the castle and allow yourselves 1.5 to 2.5 hours to explore (last entry is 4pm and the castle closes at 5pm).

Seriously, we have seen a lot of Japanese castles but Himeji Castle is one of the most impressive and oldest surviving monuments we’ve seen. Given its high on the hill position and bright white exterior, it is hard to miss.

Himeji Castle - 1 day Himeji itinerary

In fact, Himeji Castle is also known as Shirasagi-jo (white egret castle – as it looks like an egret in flight) and this particular structure was built over 440 years ago in 1580. Although the original site dates back to around 1333.

Himeji Castle - 1 day Himeji itinerary

It has been home to almost 50 different feudal lords over the years and the main building has five stories to explore plus extensive grounds, gardens and out buildings – allow at least two or three hours to visit.

When we visited in December, the Himeji Castle grounds were also lit up with special illuminations for Christmas and winter.

2026 Himeji Castle admission prices are currently 1,000 Yen but from 1 March 2026, it rises to 2,500 Yen for foreign visitors and non local resident (to raise for funds and counter over-tourism).

We loved exploring Himeji Castle and walking up all the steps in the keep to the top floor is quite some exercise – some of the stairs / ladders are quite steep so do take care. The views at the top of Himeji are spectacular.

Kogane craft beer

“Kanpai” (cheers) to Himeji! After all that walking (especially if you hiked those steep 200 steps upto Otokoyama haisui’ike park), time for a craft beer in the shadow of Himeji Castle.

Kogane craft beer Himeji - 1 day Himeji itinerary

A few steps from the castle entrance and located on the main Otemae Street, we stopped for a beer (or four) at the cool craft beer bar KOGANE 姫路クラフトビール (map).

Kogane Brewing is only a few years old, started by an architect who spotted a gap in the market for a brewery bar in Himeji.

Kogane craft beer Himeji- 1 day Himeji itinerary

We stopped by one weekday evening and spent a few hours here, working our way through their beer menu, all of which are brewed on site (you can see all the brewing vats from the bar).

Kogane’s core range includes Jet IPA (their flagship ale – and 6% ABV) and their 7% Hey juice hazy IPA – trust us when we say their beers are both very good and quite strong.

We didn’t stop for food (they have an extensive menu including pasta, grill and snacks) but we thought their craft beer was pretty good value compared to other Japanese brewery bars we’d been to – a pint of craft costs around 1,000 Yen.

Miyuki Shopping Street みゆき通り / shopping and evening dinner

One of the largest shotengai (covered shopping arcades) we’ve encountered in Japan, this long shopping street (map) leads all the way from Himeji Station practically all the way to Himeji Castle (that is like a 20 minute walk) – so it is an ideal place for wet weather shopping or to drink in one of numerous izakayas along the way.

Miyuki Shopping Street みゆき通り Himeji - 1 day Himeji itinerary

From gachapon shops to 100 Yen stores, pharmacies to karaoke bars, Miyuki Shopping Street みゆき通り is a fun way to spend some time in Himeji.

This is also a great place for evening dinner with lots of bars, eateries and traditional restaurants dotted along it (or a few konbinis if you just want a quick snack).

Miyuki Shopping Street みゆき通り Himeji
gachapon store Miyuki Shopping Street みゆき通り Himeji

After all those strong beers at Kogane brewery, we opted to soak up all the alcohol with a visit to the Himeji branch of the famous chain restaurant Torikizoku Yakitori Chain Restaurant 鳥貴族 (map).

Torikizoku offers a substantial selection of skewers (yakitori) where pretty much every dish costs 370 Yen including tax.

It is best described as an inexpensive izakaya but with a familiar feel (as all their branches have the same interiors and view into the kitchen).

With around 750 locations across Japan (often with large lines of students and young people outside), this is one of the cheapest and most popular Japanese restaurant chains – and oh yeah, the beer and high-balls are some of the cheapest we’ve had in Japan. Enjoy!
