Tokyo at Christmas and in the New Year comes alive with a feast of festive favorites and classic Christmas lights and events – a joyful Japanese 2024 Christmas in Tokyo awaits!
There are countless Tokyo Christmas events from winter wonderlands at Tokyo theme parks such as Hello Kitty Puroland or Tokyo Disneyland to Tokyo Christmas Market, the biggest in Japan!

Ice-skating is another popular Christmas activity in Tokyo (plus there is a huge outdoor Christmas Ice Rink in Yokohama) or stay warm and feast on a KFC Christmas chicken bucket.
Whilst Tokyo at night in winter may be cold, these Tokyo Christmas lights and events warm the heart – there is even a special Harry Potter Christmas tree in Akasaka and Christmas fireworks in Odaiba.
From a merry Marunouchi Christmas with new Super Mario Christmas decorations in 2024), to the chaos of Roppongi Hills illuminations (what an experience!), here are the best Tokyo Christmas events, lights and markets in 2024 / 2025 with photos.

Do they celebrate Christmas in Japan?
Whilst Christmas isn’t an official holiday in Japan (the main religions are Buddhism and Shintoism), Japan embraces Christmas and many special seasonal events, winter displays and illuminations are held.
From early November 2024 onwards, you’ll see Tokyo Christmas lights and events pop-up and some of the winter ice-skating rinks stay open until late February 2025.

In Japan, it is actually Christmas Eve that is more ‘celebrated’ than Christmas Day and kind of becomes their Valentine’s Day or White Day, as couples exchange gifts or arrange festive activities. So the Japanese really do LOVE Christmas.
P.S. There hasn’t been white Christmas in Tokyo for over a decade as it usually snows in January or February but there is always a chance!

1. Tokyo Christmas Market 2024 in Meiji Jingu Gaien
19 November to 25 December 2024
2024 Tickets are now on sale! Click here to book >
Tokyo’s biggest Christmas Market, this Winter Wonderland was one of our favorite things to do in Tokyo at Christmas and it is now open for 2024.

Very similar to the European Christmas Markets, here you’ll find dozens of alpine style cabins with lots of festive food and drink stalls, street performers, magicians and even Santa Claus himself.

Fun for all the family, you can buy gorgeous Christmas gifts like Russian dolls or fragrant candles plus children can ride on Thomas the Tank Engine or meet Father Christmas.
Dining choices include German sausages, Lindt chocolate pick and mix (so popular) plus mulled wine and huge steins of German beer – prost!

Live music and entertainment is also provided but food and drink prices are a little expensive compared to Japanese chain restaurants.
Tokyo Christmas market is paid admission and tickets must be bought in advance and include a free festive Tokyo Christmas Market mug perfect for mulled wine.
The Tokyo Christmas Market 2024 dates are 19 November to 25 December 2024. Limited tickets are also available on the door but do not include a Christmas mug.

2. Ice Skating & Christmas Lights at Tokyo Midtown 2024 / 2025
Now on until 24 February 2025
An annual Christmas tradition, the Tokyo Midtown Christmas ice-skating rink and winter illuminations has popped up every winter for almost 15 years and is a n-’ice’ thing to do!
Open daily from 22 November to 24 February 2025, it is one of the biggest outdoor Christmas skating rinks in Tokyo with ice-skating sessions available daily from 11am to 9pm.

Skating costs from 1,800 Yen per adult on weekdays and 2,000 Yen at weekends, plus 500 Yen skate-hire. Visit the official site here >
If you don’t like skating or would rather just enjoy the winter lights, Hinochiko Park next door plays host to a massive winter illumination trail which is free to visit.
Yes, this year in 2024 / 2025, there are over 200,000 soap bubble illuminations dotted around the park and there is a regular snow bubble show where fantastic, festive foam ‘rains’ down over the crowd and lights.

There are soap bubbles and snow effects so this is one place in Tokyo where you are guaranteed a white Christmas (well unless the snow machine breaks)!
The soap bubbles fall once every 6 minutes and the fake snow falls once every 15 minutes.
In addition, the Tokyo Midtown Christmas Walk of Light in Midtown Park is like walking through a wonderful winter wonderland.

The trees in Midtown Park are illuminated in golden colors and are a magical Christmas backdrop – this was one of the most popular places for seasonal selfies. Plus there were lots of dogs being photographed in Christmas jumpers; amazing!
Tokyo Midtown Christmas runs from 14 November 2024 (ice-skating begins 22 November) to 24 February 2025.

3. Tokyo Marunouchi Christmas Lights 2024 / 2025 + Super Mario Christmas Decorations
14 November 2024 to 13 January 2025 (Marunouchi Winter Illuminations until 15 February 2025)
Christmas has already arrived at Tokyo Marunouchi shopping malls and Marunouchi Street Park – and new for Christmas 2024 in Tokyo, there are Super Mario Christmas lights and decorations around Marunouchi. Perhaps they should have called Mario-nouchi!?
A very merry Christmas awaits in Marunouchi’s Nakadori Avenue – see over 1 million LED lights strung into the trees in this famous shopping area near Ginza in downtown Tokyo.

Many of the fine fashion stores along Marunouchi Naka-Dori Street also have their own Christmas displays outside. For instance in 2024, Tiffany’s has the most beautiful woodpecker illumination outside their stall, made to look like sparkling gems and jewels.

As part of the Tokyo Marunouchi Christmas Super Mario lights, there is also a stamp trail where you can collect stamps at nine different locations including the Marunouchi Building itself. There is a small fee to participate with a prize at the end.

There are also several pop-up Super Mario Christmas displays including Toad’s Holiday Garden at Marunouchi Brick Square Ichigokan Plaza.
From now until 13 January 2025, Tokyo Marunouchi Christmas is ‘Game On’ and the Nintendo lights are one of the best Christmas lights in Tokyo to visit. The outdoor Marunouchi Winter Illuminations stay on until mid February 2025.

4. Yokohama Christmas Market 2024 at Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
22 November 2024 to 25 December 2024
An easy day-trip from Tokyo, there are so many things to do in Yokohama year round, from the Cup Noodles Museum to Japan’s largest Chinatown.
Yokohama at Christmas is a magical time as the famous Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse transforms into a festive and fun place with an outdoor Christmas market spread over two plazas and a huge Christmas tree as the centrepiece.

We visited this year’s Yokohama Christmas Market on opening night (22 November 2024) and there was a huge queue to get in.
There are lots of food stalls and ample outdoor seating – the Yokohama Christmas market behind the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse looks out over the harbor and you can eat your Christmas food next to a big Yokohama sign – how ‘Hollywood’!
Yokohama 2024 Christmas market tickets start from 500 yen and you can purchase tickets online in advance from 8 November 2024 – for more details visit the official Yokohama Christmas website >

Each year, the Yokohama Art Rink has designs by a different artist plus there are lots of live music and special ice-skating events. Afterwards, grab some crafts and gorgeous Christmas gifts in the shops inside or at the outdoor market. See our Red Brick Warehouse guide here >
Check the official Red Brick Warehouse events site for details >
There is also a Yokohama ice-skating rink from 5 December 2024 at Yamashita Park at the Yokohama Winter Wonder Park event – it runs until 2 March 2025. Find out more information at the Yokohama Winter Wonder Park 2024 official site here >

5. Roppongi Hills Christmas illuminations
7 November 2024 to 25 December 2024
Honestly, this was the craziest Christmas in Tokyo activity we went to – the annual Roppongi Hills Christmas lights along Keyakizaka Street illuminate in mid November every year, with thousands of fairy lights strewn in trees along Roppongi’s famous fashion district.

Thousands visit every evening but the mad thing is that people run out across the road when cars stop at the traffic lights to pose in the middle of the road with fairlights all around and the Roppongi Tower lit up in the background.

It is Christmas chaos – every time the lights turn green, it is chaos as police and security guards usher everyone out of the road so the traffic can move, waving their batons and blowing their whistle so loud.
The illuminations continue across Roku-Roku Plaza and the nearby lake – there is often a small Christmas market here too selling hot wine and snacks.

The Roppongi Hills Christmas lights are well worth a visit but it is utter madness – but in a beautifully bizarre kind of way!
The Roppongi Hills Christmas Illuminations are free to visit and light up 7 November until the 25 December 2024.

6. Roppongi Christmas Market
On now until 25 December 2024
Snow joke – the German style Roppongi Christmas Market has been running for almost 20 years and is located in the Big Roof Plaza shopping center and free to visit.
There are around 10 German Christmas style stalls selling everything from beer to baubles, sausages to snow globes. Each year, they produce an exclusive Christmas cup which you can purchase and enjoy your festive drinks in.

Whilst not the best Christmas market in Tokyo (it has only a handful of stalls), it is nice to visit if you are here already for the much more epic Roppongi Hill Christmas Lights on nearby Keyakizaka Street.
Roppongi Christmas Market Big Roof Plaza runs from 23 November – 25 December 2024; 11am to 9pm daily.

7. Tokyo Skytree Christmas Town market
7 November 2024 to 25 December 2024
Every winter, the Tokyo Skytree lights up in different colors – this kind of makes it the biggest Christmas tree in Japan!

Downstairs in the Sky Arena area, there is a small Tokyo Skytree Christmas market with pop-up performances and festive projection mapping – also make sure you get selfies at the seasonal photo spots.
The Tokyo Skytree Christmas market is free and runs daily from 7 November to 25 December 2024, 11am – 10pm (last orders at 9pm).

8. The Peninsula Hotel Tokyo Christmas market
Every Saturday and Sunday from 16 November to December 2024
A very quick mention of The Peninsula Hotel Tokyo Christmas Market because whilst it is festive, it is tiny, consisting of just a couple of themed stores (often a Christmas gingerbread house) and a few decorations around Naka Dori Terrace.
It opens every Saturday and Sunday between 12pm and 6pm, then every day from 12pm to 8pm between 20 and 25 December 2024.

Look in the Peninsula Hotel reception for the annual gingerbread decorating class as well as the opportunity to write a letter to Santa Claus or family members.
The Peninsula also has Christmas afternoon tea and beautiful Christmas cakes made by their renowned pastry chef.
The Christmas Tokyo Peninsula activities usually take place in the two weeks before Christmas.

9. Shibuya Ao no Dokutsu blue lights
6 December to 25 December 2024
Usually the promise of a ‘blue Christmas in Tokyo’ sounds like a bad thing but not at the Shibuya Ao no Dokutsu Blue Cave illuminations.
Located along the Meguro River towards Yoyogi Park and boasting over almost 1 million blue LEDs and fairy-lights, Shibuya’s Christmas lights sure do sparkle!
In 2023, a new Christmas market was also added to the proceedings so lets hope it returns in 2024.
Shibuya’s Christmas lights and markets are free to visit and run from 6 December to 25 December 2024.

10. Ginza Six Xmas Heavenly Gift 2024
8 November 2024 to December 25 2024
We are lucky enough to be spending this Christmas in Tokyo and over favorite Tokyo shopping mall Christmas display so far is the Space Cat installation at Ginza Six by renowned Japanese artist Kenji Yanobe

Yanobe’s space cat flies through Ginza Six and is part of a huge artwork piece installed at the center of the mall for this festive season – it truly is the most ‘purr-fect’ Christmas decorations we’ve seen in Tokyo, even more so than the Super Mario Christmas lights at Marunouchi.
There is even a rooftop Christmas ice-skating rink at Tokyo Ginza Six that allows you to skate around a stupendous space cat (never a sentence we thought we would write). It is AMAZING!

11. Tokyo Shopping Malls at Christmas including Tokyo Midtown Hibiya
Pretty much every shopping mall in Tokyo and Japan has some form of Christmas decorations and Christmas trees.
You are spoiled for choice in Tokyo but some of the best Christmas shopping mall lights include Midtown and Kitte.

Our personal favorite shopping mall in Tokyo at Christmas is Tokyo Midtown Hibiya as it has numerous lit up Christmas trees in its plaza outside (very close to the Tokyo Peninsula Christmas Market too).

For Christmas 2024, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya has teamed up with Disney to promote the release of ‘Moana 2’. We visited the week the Christmas lights were switched on and they have lots of Moana themed Christmas trees in the plaza outside plus Moana 2 songs booming out!

Better yet, it has an outdoor viewing terrace overlooking Hibiya Park that is covered in thousands of Christmas fairy lights. With several seats in the gardens, it is a popular spot for romantic couples and a wonderful winter wonderland.
Most Tokyo malls have their Christmas lights on from early November and some have Santa’s Grottos too.

Visitors to the Christmas Tokyo Mega Illuminations at Oi racecourse can enjoy various winter illuminations such as a fountain show synchronized to music, the Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis display, a huge 100-meter Christmas light tunnel plus you can see tiny miniature horses.
We went to see the Tokyo racecourse Christmas lights this year (2024) and thought it was easily one of the top 5 Christmas displays in the city and well worth the small entry free – check out our of the Tokyo Mega Illuminations here >

13. Shinjuku Southern Terrace
2024 Christmas lights now on
A popular shopping and eating spot near Shinjuku station, Shinjuku Southern Terrace is an alfresco avenue of nice restaurants and coffee shops with popular places like Shake Shack burgers, eggslut and a Starbucks.
Even though there are so many things to do in Shinjuku, Shinjuku Southern Terrace sparkles at Christmas with over 200k fairy lights and LED Christmas trees.

There is a small woodland walk (well, a dozen or so trees) with are illuminated so it looks like Narnia!

14. Tokyo Dome Christmas lights and market
18 November 2024 to 28 February 2025
We’re more used to seeing baseball at the Tokyo Dome (go Giants!) – but every winter, the outer perimeter lights up with millions of fairy-lights and LEDs plus a pop-up Tokyo Christmas Market.
Tokyo Dome’s Christmas activities in 2024 are with us once again with huge Christmas trees, snow shows and dazzling domes of light, plus a seasonal Sparkle Tunnel.

From now until 28 February 2025, the Tokyo Dome at Christmas is a fun and free place to visit – you can even get a free souvenir snowflake photo taken from above as a magical memory and lasting reminder of your Christmas in Tokyo.

The centerpiece is a huge LED tree and there are often performers, pop up shops and a few seasonal surprises along the way. Lights are switched on from 5pm to midnight daily, and the official Tokyo Dome Christmas site can be found here >

16. Japan KFC buckets at Christmas
A tasty but possibly unusual Japanese Christmas tradition, lots of locals order in the famous KFC Christmas buckets every year (you can almost hear the turkeys breathe a collective sigh of relief).
Families sit around a big bucket on or near to Christmas day and these limited edition KFC Christmas buckets must be ordered in advance, usually from early November – talk about a ‘clucking’ good Christmas in Japan!

It is said that the whole thing came to be when one KFC store manager in the late 1970s heard an expat moaning about the lack of turkey in Japan. As fried chicken was the closest thing, a marketing campaign began and a new tradition grew.
Japan Christmas KFC boxes usually contain a lot of chicken, chocolate cake, shrimp gratin, gravy and sometimes seasonal specials. Nom!
The 2024 KFC Christmas dinner boxes are available to order NOW, to pick up and eat between 20 and 25 December 2024 (you have to choose a specific time-slot between 10am and 8pm).

Similar to the Roppongi Christmas lights and the Marunouchi Christmas Illuminations, Omotesandō lights up from early November to early January every year.
As well as hundreds of thousands of LEDs, in 2023, there was a 10 metre 3D printed crystal Christmas tree.
The main Christmas decorations can be found along Omotesandō Avenue and Omotesando Hills, Main Building Atrium – all the activities are free to visit.

19. Azabudai Hills Christmas
On now until 25 December 2024
One of Tokyo’s newest shopping and residential areas, Azabudai Hills is hosting their very own Christmas Market with around 20 food and drink / gift stalls from Japan and Europe.
It is open daily from 11am to 9pm and is strung with festive fairy lights and beautiful illuminations.
Highlights include panettone cake sold in tins designed by Dolce and Gabbana, a Sapporo take on German Christmas food plus a vegan stollen and soup stall.
Central Walk, which connects Kamiyacho Station Square to Tower Plaza, will be decorated as a special “Christmas Street.” this year with lots of selfie spots.
On December weekends at Azabudai Hills, you can meet Father Christmas, enjoy Christmas caricatures and performances by balloon artists.
Check out the official Azabudai Hills Christmas website here >
20. Odaiba Winter Illuminations
13 November 2024 – 16 February 2025
Free to visit, the Odaiba Christmas and Winter Illuminations sprawl across several Odaiba malls including the Decks until 16 February 2025.
This is one of the best Tokyo views any time of the year (including the weird and wonderful Tokyo Statue of Liberty) but even more so at Christmas.

This year, the Odaiba Christmas Illumination “YAKEI” shines with the night view of Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge in the background, against an epic cityscape with a 20 meter tall Christmas tree at the center. The Christmas lights turn on every evening from sunset until midnight.
Check out our guide to Odaiba >
21. Caretta Shiodome Christmas winter illumination
As of 4 December 2024, there is still no word on the illuminations – so maybe Christmas at Caretta Shiodome is cancelled!
We like Caretta Shiodome near Ginza because it has a free observation deck on level 46 and one of Tokyo’s best sky towers with ocean views looking out towards Odaiba .
It is also a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Ginza (great for Christmas shopping in Tokyo too).
Also at Christmas, the Caretta Shiodome dazzles with a captivating winter illumination display plus seasonal shops – so do some shopping or grab a Ginza Lion beer before walking over to this free winter display, usually held from mid November.

22. Yebisu Garden Place Eternal Christmas Lights
9 November 2024 to 23 January 2025 (the Christmas tree and market run until 25 December)
As one of Tokyo’s top places for breweries and craft beer, we are regular visitors to Yebisu – given all the bars, it is a great place for Christmas cheer!
2024 sees the 20th anniversary of Yebisu Garden Place’s Christmas celebrations so it is even more special than usual.
Yebisu Garden Place and the surrounding squares are lit up with a huge 10 meter Christmas tree with over 100,000 lights, plus chandeliers – now that is a bling Christmas.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of Yebisu Garden Place, a special illumination will be displayed once every 30 minutes on the promenade leading to the 10-meter-long Christmas tree and chandelier.
A small Christmas Market will be held in both Clock Square and Chateau Square this year as well, making it twice the size of last year.
Along with the illuminations in each area, you can enjoy special menus from food trucks and shopping for Christmas goods. Check the official Ebisu Garden Place Christmas 2024 site here >

23. Harry Potter Christmas tree in Akasaka
There are many Harry Potter things to do in Tokyo including a day trip to Warner Bros The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour Tokyo – this is the largest indoor Harry Potter visitor attraction in the world and Asia’s first official Warner Bros Studio Tour.
We were lucky enough to be in Tokyo at Christmas so we got a glimpse of the Harry Potter Christmas tree, which takes pride of place in the Harry Potter Plaza every winter.

Around 20 feet tall and lit with hundreds of LEDs and fairylights, it is so pretty that it would even melt Lord Voldemort’s heart (probably).
The Tokyo Harry Potter themed Christmas tree has a huge clock and is a colorful Christmas promo for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child.
