Arriving at Cat Cafe Mocha

Every branch is different, but generally most Cat Cafe Mocha branches are located on the upper levels of tall buildings – there is usually a lift ‘elevator’ straight up.

Once at the door, the prices are usually clearly displayed (more on the pricing later). You also pay at the end, depending on how long you’ve been in the cat cafe and what you have consumed.

Staff will present you with a set of cat cat rules / dos and don’ts either as a printed copy or on a tablet, which you must read / accept before you enter.

You are then asked to wash your hands and change your outside shoes for their own indoor shoes – this is to minimise the cats getting any infections or diseases from the outside world. The cafe shoes aren’t Louis Vuitton but they do the job just fine. There are lockers provided for your belongings.

Before you enter, you can also buy some cat-treats to entice the cafe cats over to you.

We bought a couple of snacks but if you are visiting to see cat cafe feeding time, you might want to save your money as the kitties will be full of food and might want to cat-nap after.

Mocha Cat Cafe characters

Once inside, a fluffy cat palace exists – most cafes have at least 20 or so cats roaming at any one time.

There are also often cat character cards telling you about each cat, their name, breed and characteristics. Some kitties can be quiet whilst some are more playful.

So for instance, the Harajuku branch currently has Temari the female Norwegian Forest Cat or Lily the Russian blue.

One thing which we really liked is that based on our experience, the Cat Cafe Mocha branches we went to (Harajuku and Shinjuku) didn’t smell too strongly of ‘cat’ (and by that, we mean cat pee). Other cat cafes we’ve been to were a bit odorous but these were fine. Good kitty!

Each cat seems to have their own preferred space or play toys – some cats we noticed just stayed in the same spot for hours.

Facilities / Food and Drink

All the cafe locations have toilets (both for humans and cats!). Most cat cafes include drinks as part of the initial admission price plus have an extensive beverage menu.

You may be asked to eat any snacks away from the cat and you’re not allowed to bring your own food and drink in.

This also includes not bringing your own cat snacks in, as the cafe owners want to maintain a healthy diet for the cats (and a healthy bank balance for themselves, as you have to buy their expensive cat snacks)!

Cat treats cost around 550 Yen per snack as of summer 2024.

What time is feeding time at Cat Cafe Mocha?

The best time of day to visit Cat Cafe Mocha is feeding time, where all of the cats are laid out in a line and eat their food in a row.

Seriously if you love Kawaii / cute things in Tokyo, a visit to Cat Cafe Mocha feeding time is one of the most memorable and best things to do in Tokyo.

We went to the Shinjuku branch to see the first cat feeding times of the day and it was amazing!

Feeding time is usually 10:30am and 7:30pm (half an hour after opening and half an hour before closing).

And don’t forget you can buy cat treats any time of day, to feed kitties up close.

Cat Cafe animal welfare

The debate about whether Cat cafes in Tokyo are ethical or a pleasant environment for cats rages on.

Obviously it depends on the cat cafe but based on the Tokyo cat cafes we’ve been to (Cat Cafe Mocha and other similar venues), the cat cafes in Japan are generally very good quality and seem to look after / feed the cats well – possibly too well as some of them are quite fattie catties.

Shinjuku Cat Cafe Mocha in Tokyo Japan

All of the cats we saw seemed to be very fluffy and content and there were areas for them to escape to if they wanted to avoid human company (we can understand that).

Also, staff were also on hand to keep out any ‘bad’ human behaviour or over enthusiastic children (or their adults even).

Other Cat-tivities

If you get bored of the cats (it isn’t possible, is it?) or you are a regular visitor with a day pass, you might want to also do some non cat-related activities or just take a break.

As well as ordering food and drink, most of the cafes have games consoles to play or anime comic book and Manga collections to browse.
