From waving at the passengers on the Tomburi River Cruises to removing dirt from Osaka’s streets (literallly, like sweeping, not in the Batman sense), the Osaka Wolfman has kind of become a Dotonbori attraction in his own lifetime. He is a ‘furry’ interesting thing to spot too (even for Japan).

The Weird and Wonderful World of Osaka’s Tonburi Wolf

Until we visited Osaka in Japan, we hadn’t heard about the Dotonbori Wolf before.

We first spotted this lone, lupine wolf when we were at the Hozenji Yokocho (Mossy Man) Temple in Dotonbori’s back-streets.

Hunkered down behind the temple, this person wearing a striking blue coat and realistic wolf mask was playing with and stroking stray cats in the temple (the cats must think he is one of them)!

At first, we just thought ‘very Osaka’ and maybe this character was coming back from a cosplay convention but is seemingly a permanent fixture of the Dotonbori district.

We subsequently saw the Tonburi Wolf most days and nights, almost ‘patrolling’ the streets and playing his with his ‘pianica’ (not a euphemism!).

The very ‘Social’ Dotonbori Wolfen

This literal lone wolf of Osaka has built up quite the social media following with over 2,500 followers on Twitter and 1,300 followers on Instagram.

On a daily basis, the wolfen posts what he has been up to including selfies with tourists, sweeping the streets and even restaurant reviews (where he doesn’t ever take of his mask).

Now that is one multi-skilled wolf. Better still, the wolfen man plans a mean tune on the melodica – more on this later.

You can follow the Tonburi Wolf on the following social channels:

Such is the Tonburi Wolfen’s localised fame in Osaka, he has appeared on a few local TV programmes where TV hosts and panelists ‘howl’ at this wolve’s antics.

The very musical and melodica(l) Wolfman

As well as an unofficial tourism ambassador for Dotonbori and eccentric diversion on the iconic Ebisubashi Bridge, this Tonburi Wolfen is very musical and often can be seen bashing out some mean tunes on his melodica / pianica at night.

We spotted the Osaka wolfman in Dotonbori most night’s during our last week-long stay in Osaka along Souemoncho Street, playing everything from modern musical tunes on his melodica to the soulful hits of Chuck Berry (very cool on the pianica). He also takes requests and tries to play popular songs.

He is easy to find at night – just follow your ears and follow the melodica tunes or look for their coned off zone complete with flashing lights, in the street just behind the famous Glico man sign.

He also has a huge orange sign with his manifesto and welcoming visitors to Osaka – nice!

Where to find the Tonburi Wolf

We saw him most nights (and sometimes in the daytime) along the Tonburi River banks in Dotonbori, especially near the running Glico Man sign and Ebisubashi Bridge.

Also keep your eyes peeled around the famous Mossy Man /  Hozenji Yokocho Temple for the hooded Tonburi Wolfen blue coat character – he also plays his melodica most nights on Souemoncho Street.

To be fair, it isn’t hard to miss a grown man parading about the streets of Osaka wearing a wolf mask is it?!

Who is the Dotonbori Wolfen?

A (wolf) man of mystery, not much is known about the Tonburi Wolfen – the wolf first appeared on the streets of Dotonbori in December 2017 and appears most nights acting as a kind of unofficial mascot for the area.

Given his costume, we think the Tonburi Wolfen might be a bit of a ‘furry’ (those who love wearing animal costumes) and based on their steps, general gait and singing voice on social, we are pretty sure the wolfen is a man.

What we do know is that the Dotonbori Wolfen is one helluva melodica / pianica player and they seems to constantly be cleaning up the streets of Dotonbori so fair play to this fine furry cosplay character.

Where to spot the Osaka Wolfman of Dotonburi

Unlike many wolves, the natural habitat of this wolf(man) is the riverside area of Dotonbori, usually around the Ebisubashi Bridge, the Mossy Man Hozenji Yokocho temple or playing their melodica on Osaka’s Souemoncho Street (fairly near Kura Sushi).
