History of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse building dates back to the 1920s, when it was used as two former storage warehouses and the Customs Inspections Department.

The original buildings were constructed in the 1910s but semi-destroyed in 1923 by the Great Kanto Earthquake so had to be rebuilt, reopening in 1930.

Yokohama Port was opened in the 1850s and the whole area around the waterfront became a busy trading hub, which also led to Yokohama’s Chinatown being created, where immigrants were allowed to settle.

During WWII, the area was used by the USA as a supply base for their troops before returning to a warehouse. It was eventually left to ruin in the 1980s, before reopening in the early 2000s as a visitor attraction.

It now attracts millions of visitors every year, and is particular popular with cruise ship passengers given its close proximity to the port.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Guide and Directory

It isn’t hard to spot this shopping centre – you can see the red brick exterior and collection of food stalls outside from far away.

On our first visit (one January), we couldn’t believe how busy the Red Brick Warehouse was, full of families shopping plus lots of ice-skaters on the Christmas ice-skating rink (this usually runs from November until January).

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouses are split into two levels across two historic buildings – the great thing is that there are so many different types of shops or pop-up events (often anime, Manga and Kawaii cuteness).

The first building is mainly used for events and cultural performances / pop-up exhibitions with a limited selection of cafes. The second red brick warehouse is home to dozens of stalls, food kiosks and sit down restaurants.

For instance, when we visited, there was the most incredible B-Side Label pop-up.

If you don’t know B-Side, it is a Japanese sticker and stationery company with nationwide stores, selling sublime high quality stickers with thousands of different designs from local and up an coming artists, as well as collaborations like Pokémon, One Piece and Dragon Ball.

Shopping for gifts and artisan crafts

The great thing about the shops at the Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama is that they are mainly independent stalls, selling an awesome array of artisan goods and cute crafts.

Some of the shops do sell standard tourist tat at a high mark up too (possibly for the cruise ship passengers who drop by here on the way back to the ship).

There are some really interesting shops here that sell some super cute Japanese toys, clothes and edible souvenirs.

We also spotted a terrarium workshop Milky Green – where you could create your own miniature garden in a glass bowl (alas not something we could partake in and put in our suitcase home!)

  • Artificial beach
  • Sake Square (kanpai!)

Plan My Japan Tip – we stayed at the APA Hotel & Resort Yokohama Bay Tower which was a very short walk from the red brick buildings. We booked a room on the 25th floor looking over the warehouses and port. Check out our guide to APA Hotels here >
