One of Japan’s hottest tickets, Kirby Cafe Japan usually books up within minutes of going on sale.
With only three permanent Kirby Cafes in Japan including branches in Tokyo and Osaka, getting a Kirby Cafe reservation can be harder than completing a Kirby game blindfolded!

On our most recent trip to Japan in late 2024, we managed to get Kirby Cafe Tokyo tickets and sat down for a Kirby themed meal in a forest setting plus bought some cool souvenirs in the gift-shop as we left.
From prices to ticket reservations, food to the restaurant interior, here is our guide to the Kirby Cafes in Japan plus how to secure a Kirby Cafe reservation / ticket.

What is a Kirby Cafe?
Kirby Cafe began life with its first branch in Osaka opened in August 2016 – since then, several new Kirby Cafes have popped up including permanent Kirby Cafes in Tokyo (beneath Tokyo Skytree) and at the Canal City Hakata mall in Fukuoka.
Each cafe has a different interior – for instance, the Tokyo Kirby Cafe is centered around a huge Whispy Woods tree character installed in the restaurant (it looks so cute).

The Kirby Cafe menus are themed and you can try fun dishes such as a Kirby shaped hamburger, Waddle Dee napping Japanese omelette, the Great Adventure!
Car-shaped gourmet plate or some very decadent desserts – seasonal Kirby dishes are also available like Kirby’s Fluffy Snowman in winter-time.
All of the Kirby Cafes have gift shops with exclusive merchandise plus opportunities to buy souvenir cups and plates from the main dining menu.

Kirby Cafe Petite and Gift Shops
As well as the permanent Kirby Cafes, there are two smaller Kirby Cafe Petit stores which are sublime sweet shops and dessert palaces where you can take away themed Kirby sweet treats.
The two Kirby Cafe petits can be found at Tokyo Station in the Tokyo Character Street area plus in Osaka at Tennōji MIO / Tennoji Station.

Finally, there are also Kirby Cafe stores in Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka).
So if you are looking for Kirby merchandise in Japan, you won’t find it hard to find – just bring an empty suitcase! There is so much actual kitchen gear you can take home too including branded aprons, chef hats and cutlery – too cute!

Kirby Cafe reservations – how to get tickets
The one downside to the Kirby Cafes in Japan is that there is so much hype, Kirby Cafe reservations and tickets get fully booked as soon as they are released, because there are only three cafes across Japan.

Kirby Cafe reservations only become available on the 10th of every month at 6pm Japanese time on the official Kirby site, covering the month ahead.
So for instance, the Kirby Cafe reservations for 11 March to 10 April appear online on 10 February at 6pm Japan time. So make sure you set an alarm or diary reminder so you don’t miss out!

Based on our experience of booking Kirby Cafe Tokyo, Kirby Cafe reservations fully book / sell-out within seconds.
You absolutely need to be on the official site and ready to book straight away at 6pm Japan time on the 10th of the month (6.01pm will probably be too late!)
You don’t need a credit card or to make a payment to reserve but you will need to put in some details – plus take along your passport on the day of your booking, if successful.

Plan My Japan Top Tip – Make sure you have a few dates and time slots in mind as your chosen slot may well be already sold out within seconds of you going on the Kirby Cafe site. Flexibility is key and only one of several days we had allocated was available as soon as we had logged on. In summary, be QUICK!

Kirby Cafe review – our Tokyo Kirby Cafe experience
After a frantic session to secure a booking, we visited Kirby Cafe Tokyo in December 2024 – located beneath Tokyo Sky Tree. It was busy at the time as the famous Tokyo Sky Tree Christmas Market was also on, one of Tokyo’s best Christmas events.
Remember, the person who has made the booking must bring their passport as proof of identification. Before you enter, the member of staff checks your ID plus also shows you a list of guidelines you must agree to before dining including maximum dining time and ordering all your food including desserts in one go.

Once through the Kirby Cafe Tokyo doors, we were given some huge Kirby Cafe cutlery props to pose with, whilst a member of staff took our photos on our phone – very cute!

We were shown to our table and given huge menus to choose from – the theming inside the restaurant was kind of cool especially the huge Whispy Wood installation but there wasn’t as much theming and Kawaii cuteness as we’d expected.

Other than the odd Kirby cushion and wall decoration, it was actually Kirby-lite! Maybe it is just us but we were expecting something more along the lines of the dining area at Sanrio Puroland.
It just felt like a standard cafe with a few pretty props – maybe the food will be better instead…?

Kirby Cafe food
Full disclosure – we aren’t huge Kirby fans or players but after seeing the Kirby Cafe Gift Shop at Tokyo Character Street, we thought it’d be fun to dine at the Kirby Cafe.
As you’d expect, Kirby Cafe is relatively expensive compared to Japanese chain restaurants like Kura Sushi or CoCo Ichibanya but this par the course with themed restaurants.

We tried the Kirby burger (with a pink bun) which cost around 2,180 yen (around £11 / $14 USD) which had a few sides like a star potato croquette, broccoli, spaghetti and tomato soup – basically it was quite an odd combination and reminded us of school dinners.

We also had a thyme crusted chicken dish with bacon (not themed other than a Kirby flag) which cost 1,680 Yen plus a tiny pizza for 1,580 Yen.

Our total bill for 3 small dishes and a coffee came to 6,589 Yen plus tax (around £33 or $42) – so not cheap but neither exorbitant either.
We found all the Kirby Cafe food quite bland with very small portions but that is likely because the menu is likely more aimed at kids. All of our food was just ‘OK’ – the burger had no flavour and the pizza was bad. We enjoyed the chicken and bacon dish but there wasn’t enough of it.

The thing that puzzles us is that based on our own Tokyo Kirby Cafe experience is that the majority of diners were couples and adults – so why have such average food when it isn’t just about kids having a fun themed experience?

Review and summary
A trip to a Kirby Cafe is likely on a lot of people’s Japan bucket list – whilst the food is so-so, it is a fun experience but one you won’t likely want to repeat.
Given the hype and only three permanent locations, Kirby Cafe reservations are like gold-dust so make sure you are logged in ready to book on the 10th of the month. Set a reminder so you don’t miss out.
And if you aren’t lucky enough to get a reservation, it isn’t ‘Game Over’ as the Kirby Cafe stores and Kirby Cafe Petit takeout branches will offer some consolation.
