The success story of Japan 7-Eleven smoothies

Although sit-down Japanese cafes and coffee shops are wonderful, sometimes all you want is a cheap drink to go or something ‘healthy’ very late at night – and 7-Eleven in Japan is a big business with a shop on practically every street corner.

As of 2024, there are around 22,000 7-Eleven stores in Japan – wow!

Often open 24 hours a day, pretty much every visitor to Japan has at some stage dived into a 7-Eleven Japan convenience store for a quick bite (these stores are also known as konbinis in Japan).

Japan 7-Eleven Smoothies

The latest 7-Eleven Japan trend amongst travellers and locals is their new 7-Eleven smoothies – these are available in the freezer section.

Pay at the counter and then mix away in the in-store blender and smoothie maker. They are becoming as common as in store microwaves and hot water dispensers – but note not all 7-Eleven Japan stores have smoothie makers (yet).

How to use the 7-Eleven smoothie maker – a step by step guide

The 7-Eleven smoothie makers are very easy to use but we have genuinely seen travellers breaking a smoothie maker (at the viral 7-Eleven Hammerheads store in Yokohama) by not removing the plastic wrap from the cup before inserting it. The store staff were not happy and obviously wouldn’t give them a refund after breaking the machine!

So here are some simple steps for a successful 7-Eleven smoothie trip:

Step 1
Find the smoothie section in the freezer or chiller cabinets. Choose your favourite flavor and take it to the counter to pay. You must pay for the smoothie before using the blender / smoothie maker.

Step 2
Take your smoothie cup complete with contents over to the smoothie maker – most stores have one smoothie blending machine but bigger branches sometimes have two.

The smoothie maker door will be sealed. Scan your smoothie barcode to get the door to open – this also tells it which flavor / fruits you have so it can blend accordingly.

After scanning your barcode, remove the plastic top / seal and put it in the smoothie machine tray which opens up.

DO NOT leave the plastic seal on or you will break the machine. Like we said before, we have seen this happen at a Yokohama branch of 7-Eleven and the poor staff had to go into the machine to remove fruit gunk and packaging.

Step 3
Once the open smoothie cup is in the unit, it will prompt you to hit OK once and then again to make doubly sure.

Once confirmed, it usually takes the 7-Eleven Japan blender unit about a minute to mix and make your smoothie.

Step 4
Once finished, the screen says ‘Ready’ – remove your drink and the door then seals again to run through a cleaning cycle.

So if you have two smoothies, you need to wait for the cleaning to finish before putting in the second cup.

Drink, sup and enjoy – remember that walking and drinking in Japan in public is still frowned upon so you may want to drink it outside the store or back at your Japan hotel or accommodation.

Why are 7-Eleven smoothies so popular in Japan?

So why have 7-Eleven Japan smoothies gone viral and become so successful? There are several factors at play:

  • Price – The 7-Eleven smoothies in Japan are relatively inexpensive plus the price of actual fruit is usually quite expensive compared to other countries.
  • Flavors – there are currently 7 flavors to choose from and if you don’t like fruit, you can also enjoy a vegetable or coffee smoothie!
  • Fun to make – once you’ve purchased your smoothie cup, it is relatively straightforward to to make your smoothie and follow the on-screen instructions. We’ve seen numerous tourists filming themselves making smoothies.
  • Cleanliness – the smoothie makers in 7-Eleven go on an automatic wash / clean cycle after making every smoothie (which is great unless there is a big queue as it all takes time).
