Part food theme park, part museum, Hiroshima’s Okonomi-mura is a must visit for anyone obsessed with okonomiyaki (Japan’s sublime savory pancake).
Hiroshima is said to be home of some forms of okonomiyaki and all around the city, you’ll bear witness to this from dozens of restaurants specialising in this dish to even okonomiyaki manhole covers (which look good enough to eat).

How to find Hiroshima’s Okonomi-mura お好み村
You can get a tram or bus from Hiroshima Station:
By Tram
The nearest tram stops to Okonomimura are either Haccho-bori (Okonomimura is a three-minute walk from there) or Ebisucho.
By Bus
Get off at the Hatchobori bus stop – Okonomimura is a 5-minute walk from there. Or alight at Hiroshima Bus Center (a 10 minute walk from there).

Once you arrive outside the building, it is still quite easy to get lost unless you know where you are going.
There’s a large vertical “Okonomimura” sign in Japanese (red writing on a white background) on the front of the building (you might need to use Google Translate).

To get to the okonomiyaki restaurants, head up the stairs (see image below). All the okonomiyaki restaurants are located on floors 2 to 4 (floors 5 to 7 are other businesses).

The address is 5-13 Shintenchi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture 730-0034, Japan or you can find it on Google Maps here >

Okonomi-mura お好み村 is open daily from 11am to 9pm but most stalls close after lunch for a mid afternoon break.
We visited at 3pm one afternoon and the vast majority of stalls were closed.

What is Okonomiyaki and how is Hiroshima style different?
Okonomiyaki is a classic Japanese comfort food dish that originates from both Osaka and Hiroshima. Literally meaning ‘grilled as you like it’, this savoury pancake is made by cooking batter mixed together with sliced cabbage on a big teppanyaki hot plate.

Other savoury ingredients such as pork or seafood are usually included in the mixture, and toppings normally include bonito flakes, dried seaweed, mayonnaise and a worcester-style sauce. The Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki also includes a layer of fried soba noodles.

You can find okonomiyaki all over Japan in restaurants that specialise in the dish, and in some places diners can grill the dish themselves on a hotplate that is built into the table.
And as far as we know, Okonomimura has the biggest range of okonomiyaki restaurants under one roof!

Visiting Okonomi-mura お好み村
We recently spent a week in Hiroshima and visited Okonomi-mura on a couple of occasions – once mid afternoon when it was mainly closed (but we still found a couple of stalls open) and at night when it was heaving with locals and tourists.

There are around 20 okonomiyaki restaurants at Okonomi-mura split across several storeys – you can use the elevator to go between each level or there are some stairs (which feature okonomiyaki cartoon graphics in places – too cool)!

Okonomi-mura opened almost 60 years ago in 1967, as a place for street-food traders to set up more permanent restaurant spaces – many of the stalls are still family run, passed on down from generation to generation.
There is a great mix of small and big stalls and given how everyone sits around a huge hot griddle, most of these places are very lively and social (especially given how much beer and sake is consumed with all the okonomiyaki – kanpai!)

Pancake Perfection
With over 20 okonomiyaki restaurants to choose from, the best advice we can give is to see where the local workers and families head.
The stalls varied in size from tiny restaurants with just enough room for 8 seats through to huge restaurants and hot plates towards the rear of the corridors.

Prices range from around 900 Yen for a basic Hiroshima style noodle okonomiyaki to over 2,000 Yen for special seafood pancakes.
We ate at Teppei. After having a stall by Hiroshima Station for over 30 years, Teppei moved to Okonomimura and serves traditional okonomiyaki loved by locals plus teppanyaki and oyster dishes cooked up in front of you.

The stall was manned by an elderly couple on our visit and we were given laminated menus in English to choose from (you pay the bill at the end).
Okonomiyaki dishes on the menu at Teppi included:
- Fried egg or cheese okonomiyaki – 1,200 Yen
- Beef and pork okonomiyaki (Teppei special) – 1,700 Yen
- Oyster okonomiyaki – 1,800 Yen
- Deluxe seafood okonomiyaki – 2,300 Yen
Or try some scallops for 1,300 Yen, tan shio beef tonge for 1,200 Yen or kaki yaki grilled oysters for 1,300 Yen – all Teppei / Okonomimura prices are correct as of our visit in late 2024.

Okonomiyaki Gachapon
After dinner, have a look around the rest of the building or go for a beer at another bar.
Keep an eye out for okonomiyaki merchandise like these cute as gachapons – some stalls also sell souvenir t-shirts.
