Visiting Tokyo in March? Lucky you! From spring festivals to the height of cherry blossom season, there are many wonderful Tokyo March events and festivals.

Some of the March Tokyo religious festivals include the Hina Matsuri Doll Festival, the Golden Dragon Dance ( Kinryu-no-Mai) and Jindaiji Temple Daruma Doll Fair – or cheer on the Tokyo Marathon runners on 1 March.

Tokyo concerts in March 2026 include Aiko, Macaroni Empitsu, King Gnu and Babymonster.

Japan / Tokyo national holidays in March 2026

Please note there is one official public / national holiday in Japan / Tokyo in March:

March 20 is Vernal Equinox Day – it is a public holiday marking the official start of spring, and many families will visit ancestors’ graves and enjoy family meals together, possibly starting new projects or doing spring cleaning.

Tokyo March 2026 festivals and events

From blossom festivals to temple gatherings, there is lots to enjoy in Tokyo in March:

Japan’s largest road race, the Tokyo Marathon attracts over 30,000 runners from all over the world.

The 26 mile running route begins at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office in Shinjuku via Asakusa and Ginza before finishing at Imperial Palace, near Tokyo Station.

First ran in 2007 and celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, there is also a smaller 10.7km race – please be aware traffic and buses will be subject to diversions on these days and the Tokyo Metro system may be busy along the Tokyo Marathon route.

It is a little too early to forecast the 2026 Tokyo cherry blossom and plum blossom dates yet but they often appear sometime in late February – however, peak cherry blossom bloom in Tokyo is usually starting in March.

Plum blossoms (ume) usually start a little earlier than cherry blossoms and early plum blossom festivals in Tokyo in February 2026 include Setagaya Ume Matsuri (Plum Festival) せたがや梅まつりin Hanegi Park (Setagaya), Fucho Kyodonomori Park Plum Festival 2026 and Bunkyo Ume Matsuri festival.

That said, we saw plum blossoms last year as early as December (at Himeji Castle) so who knows when it will be fully in bloom.

Some of the best spots for Tokyo cherry blossom / plum blossom are Shinjuku Gyoen, Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi Park.

Over 1,000 cherry blossom trees bloom into life in Ueno Park, usually by mid March – we’ve been lucky enough to experience the sakura season here ourselves and the Ueno Park Cherry Blossom Festival is an epic experience.

The park is full of families and huge gatherings, with early attendees grabbing the best spots below cherry blossom trees early in the morning, claiming their spot with picnic blankets and rugs.

As the day progresses, thousands more descend on Ueno and most enjoy home-made food and lots of sake and beer.

Nearby, there will be pop-up food stalls and food markets in Ueno Park along with performers and musicians.

Hina Matsuri (雛祭り) traditional doll festival celebrated nationwide wishing for the health and happiness of girls. It falls on 3 March every year but as this is a Tuesday in 2026, many of the celebrations will take place on Sunday 1 March.

Asakusa is one of the main places to see Hina Matsuri in action, with dolls and stalls at Sensoji temple.

A famous spring and March event in Tokyo, this daruma doll festival began back in the Edo period and this is one of the biggest daruma doll fairs in the whole of Japan.

The annual fair usually has several hundred stalls selling daruma, food and spring souvenirs and temple amulets. Priests are also on hand to bless your dolls and write Sanskrit words of wisdom on your darumas.

Every hour, prayers are offered and cedar wood burned to ward off evil spirits and encourage good fortune. 

Several times every mid March (and on 18 October), a giant golden dragon dances to enchanting museum at Sensoji temple (once known as Kinryuzan Sensoji, named after a mountain).

According to Go Tokyo, Kinryu-no-Mai was created in 1958 to celebrate the reconstruction of Kannondo, Sensoji’s main hall.
